Artist Statement
My body of work explores the realms of superimposition by exploring the camera’s ability to use slow shutter speed and manual flash to create an image that captures time and space in multiple dimensions. I intentionally created multiple moments in time into a single image to create a composition that can embody aspects of the teenage boy mindset and personality and used a technique to capture a ghost like presence in these photos to help show the inner self of these young men and the bond they have with their friendship.
I was able to capture a hidden narrative that comes with everyday life of a teenager and for my audience it could maybe even bring back memories of one’s own younger self. I worked on this series for months creating and capturing these boys and experimented with my camera and light to create captivating photographs while also telling a story of teenage life and friendship in the year 2025.
In this body of work, I wanted to showcase the boys and show snippets of who they are and how they think about their own self and who they are. As teenage life is a wonderous time of exploration and a process of building one’s self-esteem. It’s also a time of building connections with others that all will follow them into adulthood. I took the lead from these two boys and let them explore movements and expressions and added a bit of my own direction to create a collaborated body of work that showcases these two teenage boys and also give a glimpse of myself as an artist working behind the camera, so please enjoy.
Inspirations for my series “Superimposition”
The inspiration for my series called “Superimposition” was born after I did a focus photo shoot on movement. My model was my niece Caylin and I played around with different light set ups and some camera techniques. There were two techniques and light set up that I wanted to explore further. The first technique I used was double exposure to create multiple moments and expressions all in a single photograph using my camera settings and light set ups. The second technique that I wanted to investigate further was a flash and blur technique that can capture a ghost like presence in a single photo. This is how my series “Superimposition” was born.
I created a three-part series with a focus on boyhood and teenage life and my models are two sophomores one being my son Tyler and his best friend Blake that have been close since kindergarten. With this series I collaborated with them and allowed them to show their personality and how they view themselves as they are growing into adulthood. The second series I used the flash and blur technique that created another opportunity for them to express what is important to them and give the audience an experience that allows them to see their friendship and their inner confidence.
For the third series we ventured out of the studio and into their life’s and I played with some other camera techniques to create a interesting viewing experience. One photoshoot was there first prom they have attended and were all dressed up. Another was at the beach and focused on how important their truck is to them as driving is a big milestone in a teenage boy’s life. As a mother this series really showed a preview of the men, they will be in the future it was a lot of fun creating and collaborating with the boys. I would like to continue with this series to add an animal addition in the future. I hope you enjoy this series as much as I do.
